Hoje, quase todas as vinícolas são nas mãos das mesmas famílias fundadoras, na terceira, quarta ou mesmo quinta geração, que continuam o legado de seus ancestrais.O Uruguai é o primeiro país da América Latina e um dos poucos do mundo a ter suas vinícolas e vinhas georreferenciadas.
O clima da costa atlântica é muitas vezes comparado ao de Bordeaux, produzindo vinhos com níveis equilibrados de álcool e acidez. Além disso, a influência benigna do Oceano Atlântico e a chuva moderam a temperatura nos meses mais quentes, dando um frescor especial aos vinhos do Uruguai.
